Just a Little Movie from 1959

When Disney+ was first released, I went through and found a bunch of stuff I had to watch right away. I also found a bunch of things that I wanted to watch later. Some of those things include Supercar Megabuilt, a bunch of NatGeo nature documentaries, and then a movie called Darby O’Gill and the Little People.

I had no idea what was in store for me when I started Darby O’Gill over the weekend. Right away, I loved the Irish accents (my great-grandfather was born in Ireland), and the rest only added to the cuteness of the movie.

First, you might recognize the girl, Katie, from Swiss Family Robinson where she played Roberta, the girl the boys rescued from pirates. The other familiar face came a few minutes later when Michael came onto the screen. I knew that face, and as soon as he opened his mouth, I realized it was none other than Sean Connery! Although here he didn’t have his Scottish accent and instead donned an Irish one.

It’s a cute story about Irish folklore based on the character Darby O’Gill from H. T. Kavanagh’s book Darby O’Gill and the Good People. Without giving the ending away, it’s a cute story about a clever old man who manages to out fox the King of the Leprechauns.

I was pleasantly surprised this weekend by Darby O’Gill, and you better believe I’ll be watching this one again! If you’re in the mood for a feel-good movie with brilliant special effects (for 1959) from decades ago, this fits the bill!
